Bellver Castle
A key destination for understanding the culture of Mallorca is Bellver Castle. This Gothic-style fortress is especially unique for its circular floor plan, the oldest in Europe with these characteristics. It was built in the 14th century under the rule of James II and was originally conceived as the royal residence of the Mallorcan kings. From 1717 it was used as a military prison, until it opened to the public as a tourist monument.
With its fantastic location on top of a hill in the middle of a pine forest, Bellver Castle is one of the best places to enjoy the views of the city. Don’t forgot to take a walk through its circular inner courtyard, which is full of Gothic arches, and to go up the Keep.
